Hoffman manages to make us like Harvey, but, more importantly, he makes us understand him; as Harvey watches his ex-wife (Kathy Baker) and her new husband (the bluff, majestic James Brolin) take the lead at his daughter's wedding, we understand what he regrets and what he accepts. Thompson also makes Kate more than what she could be -- Thompson's always had a particular skill with hesitant pauses, the kind where you can see her brain moving faster than her mouth, and in Last Chance Harvey, that serves her well: How can she be so willing to spend so much time with this ridiculous American? Part of it is that it's nice to be needed; the other is that both Harvey and Kate, alone and used to that state, find that they need to be nice -- need to know that their help or approval can actually matter to another person, after all. Last Chance Harvey is a movie for grown-ups, but not in that clammy, Oscar-craving way that would make it untenable; it's a movie about people that takes place in the real world. I took a very nice eight point that year, on the first day.I sat in a rock pile with a small pin cherry tree growing up out of the middle of the rocks. I saw two deer that day, a small buck in the morning and the eight point I killed that late afternoon.There were not a lot of deer back then, but we would see eight or 10 deer in the morning and that many again in the evening.My grandpa used to say we had a lot more deer in 1976 then they had in the mid-'50s, but I never thought there were that many deer when I began hunting.In 1977 I did not take a buck, but remember one morning having 11 does walk by me (very close) in single file line heading to the swamp from the fields back east.That was the most deer I saw for a lot of deer seasons, until sometime around 1987 when it was not uncommon to see 30 to 40 deer in a morning.Through the '90s, I would see 20 to 30 deer every day easily, sometimes I'd lose count.You can drive around in the evening now and see 40 to 60 (sometimes even more) deer in a mile section.The deer populations seem to be strong now, but some hunters occasionally come to Jay's and tell me there are some areas in Michigan where the deer populations are very low and they seldom see any deer or only a couple deer in a whole day.Deer populations in some areas have been greatly reduced, because of the doe tags handed out over the past few years.I am afraid hunting has become more commercialized as of late, at least when a person watches some of the shows on the outdoor channels.Big bucks do make people money, but hunting deer shouldn't be about people making money. To much emphasis put on taking a huge buck.Deer hunting isn't about killing a trophy, it's about spending time with friends and family and putting venison in the freezer.Deer hunting is about controlling a deer population and putting food on the table. If a good buck comes by, good for that hunter.A hunter should be no less happy with a six point than a big 10 point</p><br /><p> It is very funny because I still think of myself as an Ohioan. I root for Ohio State. I can't get used to the fact that my kids are New Yorkers. I think my kids are Ohioans too. I have three kids. At least one of them watches all of the Ohio State games with me. I have a son in college in Indiana. A senior in high school and a sophomore in high school. <br/>7.
