Up until now, some 300,000 tons of rebar used on the island has been imported from Venezuela and South American nations.

Raw materials for the plant will come directly from Puerto Rico's own supply of scrap steel, estimated to amount to as much as 220,000 tons per year, coming from the demolition of construction projects, old refrigerators, cars and trucks. The remainder of the steel will be imported from Central America and the Dominican Republic.

Presently Puerto Rico exports scrap metal when prices are high and watches scrap metal pile up when prices are low, according to a presentation from American Micro Steel.

Production Process Safe, Profitable
In a production process that is safe and more environmentally friendly than steel smelting plants, recycled steel is first ground and then heated to form steel rebar. The steel rebar manufactured in Puerto Rico will be coated with an epoxy finish to protect it from moisture and salts that corrodes rebar used in cement construction and ultimately weaken it.

Incorporated in Puerto Rico, American Micro Steel projects its Puerto Rico operations to gross $64 million per year, providing a great example for doing business in Puerto Rico and Puerto Rico's business-positive economic climate.
