Let's not lose sight of the other ones that have died.'
Although he is haunted by memories, Cyrus says he is one of the lucky ones who returned home. 'I'm still here, it's not about me, it's about the ones that aren't here. The whole object is that we will remember them.'
But the memories of Canadian soldiers, those who continue to serve and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice shouldn't be relegated to a matter of minutes. 'I don't think remembering has to be done just on Remembrance Day. It's not one day that you should remember the people that fought and died for you. If you only take two minutes out of the year to remember people that fought and died for you, do you really need to remember us?'
Every time he watches the news Cyrus is reminded of the efforts of Canadian soldiers, many are his friends and comrades. 'There are still a lot of my cohorts serving and whenever I hear of another soldier killed I wonder which one of my cohorts is it? I check my e-mail whenever a flag is lowered to see who it is this time. Every four years you were moved around so you come to know a whole lot of people; it becomes a huge family.'
Cyrus would like to see greater emphasis put on the importance of remembering and supporting our troops so that they always know their efforts are appreciated. 'I don't see enough people pushing the interest. I really think this is something that needs to be addressed more in school programs.'
On Remembrance Day he will be among the many who will take time to remember, but when the day is done, he will be among the few who will continue to do so throughout the year.
