Shop staff chase off armed raiders
ALASDAIR MCGREGOR 09 November 2008 15:30 Staff at a Yarmouth jewellery store managed to chase off two hammer-wielding robbers as Saturday afternoon shoppers watched on.
The thieves, both wearing hoods and mask, burst into the Cox and Son Jewellers' shop, in Northgate Street, and stole a selection of watches after smashing up a glass cabinet with sledgehammers.
They were then challenged by members of staff, who were able to force the two men out of the shop and one of the sledgehammers was dropped, said a police spokesman.
The offenders then got into a red and grey Rover 214 where a third male was waiting as the driver. Before they could make off, the staff were able to smash the passenger window of the car using a chair.
The car was found abandoned a short time later at the rear of East Road, close to the cemetery grounds of St Nicholas Church. A second sledgehammer was found in the vehicle.
No-one at the shop was injured or assaulted during the robbery, which took place at about 3.20pm yesterday.
Police are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle in the Yarmouth area during that afternoon or saw the raiders after the vehicle was abandoned.
Anyone with information should contact Det Sgt Graeme Talbot or Det Con Craig Lovatt at Yarmouth CID on 0845 4564567, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
